The Alliance is a program of the New York Academy of Sciences dedicated to advancing the careers of students and postdocs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We offer career education, development and training programs for science PhDs provided through seminars, courses, webinars, and a dedicated website.

Science Alliance & HackNY co-host "Machine Learning Careers in NYC Startups"

After the close of the 5th Annual Machine Learning Symposium on Friday, October 22, there was a series of short talks on machine learning problems encountered in the NYC startup community. Local startups foursquare.com, drop.io, etsy.com, and bit.ly discussed examples of real-world, data-intensive challenges that they currently face, as well as job opportunities at NYC startups. This event was co-organized by Science Alliance and hackNY.org with the support of friends including IA Ventures and AOL Ventures.

First Science Alliance Event for the Fall

Management Consulting: Using Your Scientific Mind to Solve Business Problems was held at the Academy on Sept 20, 2010. The workshop was led by consultants from McKinsey & Company and drew over 100 participants Read the recap here.

Science Alliance Event at the Academy 

On July 1, Science Alliance hosted a special event for the participants in NYC-based Summer Undergraduate Research Programs (SURP). This year, in coordination with the AAMC, there was a panel discussion on pursuing a MD/PhD dual degree. Last year's event focused on highlighting faculty research and brought together almost 200 undergraduates participating in research in NYC-based schools; a similar turnout was achieved this year, as well.

Science Alliance Co-hosted Event at the Academy

Science Alliance co-sponsored the June 23 conference “Innovating and Updating the Medical School Curriculum”. This full day event convened medical school deans, educators, students, physicians and accrediting institutions to address revamping medical education to include new technologies and better integration with basic sciences.

Science Alliance at Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Two New York Academy of Sciences Programs, Science Alliance and Scientists Without Borders, spoke at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Monica Kerr, PhD, Director of Science Alliance presented career development strategies for scientists and Shaifali Puri, Director of Scientists Without Borders, presented ways young scientists can improve the quality of life in the developing world through science-based initiatives.

Science Alliance Roundtable

On June 7, Science Alliance held a Roundtable discussion with faculty, administrators, postdocs, and students invited from partner institutions. Attendees started off with the workshop "Improvisation for Creativity, Communication, and Collaboration in the Workplace" by Jim Tosone. Following this, Monica Kerr gave a presentation "Doctoral Education and Career Trends" and then led a discussion on career mentoring best practices and recommendations.

Science Alliance in Barcelona

At the Towards Personalized Cancer Medicine conference on May 19-21, 2010 in Barcelona, Spain, Science Alliance presented a special session for student attendees: “Writing for Scientific Publication.” Although publishing is critical to the scientific profession, formalized instruction on developing skills in this area is very limited. In order to help fill in this gap, Brooke Grindlinger, PhD, covered the components of a good paper, discussed strategies for selecting the appropriate journal, and provided an overview of the review process and how to navigate resubmissions.

Director Completed Harvard Macy Program for Educators in Health Professions

Science Alliance Director Monica Kerr, PhD will be attending the 2010 Program for Educators in Health Professions at the Harvard Macy Institute in Boston, MA. Monica will be presenting the poster "Using online resources to enhance career development programming for science PhDs". This is the second session of the 17-day course, which first convened for two weeks in January, 2010.
