The Alliance is a program of the New York Academy of Sciences dedicated to advancing the careers of students and postdocs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We offer career education, development and training programs for science PhDs provided through seminars, courses, webinars, and a dedicated website.

Career Path Video: From the PhD to Science Publishing- Brooke Grindlinger

Brooke Grindlinger, PhD
Director, Life Sciences at The New York Academy of Sciences

 

Brooke Grindlinger completed her PhD in microbiology at the School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences at The University of Sydney, Australia, where she was the recipient of an Australian Postgraduate Award. Brooke utilized comparative proteomics to study the pathogenesis of the tuberculosis-causing organism Mycobacterium tuberculosis. After relocating to New York, Brooke joined the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Investigation. Serving for 7 years as Science Editor, Brooke managed the publication of state-of-the-art journal content, including Reviews and Commentaries, in all facets of human physiology and disease, and authored news features, editorials, book reviews, and press releases.


Brooke joined the Academy in February 2010. In her role as Director of Life Sciences, Brooke oversees the development of scientific content for the Academy's diverse program of local, national, and international Conferences, simultaneously building alliances with leading clinicians, researchers, and organizations active in all fields of life sciences in academia, government, and industry.

Inaugural PhD CareerCast: From the PhD to Science Publishing- Jennifer Henry

Jennifer Henry, PhD
Director, Life Sciences at The New York Academy of Sciences

Jennifer Henry received her PhD in plant molecular biology from the University of Melbourne, Australia, with Paul Taylor at the University of Melbourne and Phil Larkin at CSIRO Plant Industry in Canberra, specializing in the genetic engineering of transgenic crops. She was then appointed as Associate Editor, then Editor, of Functional Plant Biology at CSIRO Publishing. She moved to New York for her appointment as a Publishing Manager in the Academic Journals division at Nature Publishing Group, where she was responsible for the publication of biomedical journals in nephrology, clinical pharmacology, hypertension, dermatology, and oncology.


Jennifer joined the Academy in 2009 as Director of Life Sciences and organizes 35-40 seminars each year. She is responsible for developing scientific content in coordination with the various life sciences Discussion Group steering committees, under the auspices of the Academy's Frontiers of Science program. She also generates alliances with outside organizations interested in the programmatic content.
